LOAN BASICS

A smaller EMI is only part of the picture

Understand how tenure changes monthly affordability and total repayment.

Two numbers worth comparing

Your EMI is the regular payment you budget for. Total repayment is what you pay across the loan term. Both matter: a monthly payment that feels comfortable can still result in a larger overall repayment.

How tenure changes the outcome

For the same loan amount and positive interest rate, spreading repayment over more months generally reduces the EMI and increases total interest. For example, at an illustrative 12% annual rate, a ₹5 lakh reducing-balance loan has an EMI of about ₹16,607 over 36 months, versus ₹13,167 over 48 months. Total scheduled repayment is about ₹5.98 lakh versus ₹6.32 lakh, before fees.

Leave room in your budget

Set out take-home income, household expenses, existing EMIs and irregular expenses. Test whether the proposed payment remains manageable if income falls or an unexpected bill arrives. Avoid choosing a payment based only on the maximum amount a lender might approve.

Check the assumptions

Calculator results are estimates. Confirm the interest calculation method, rate type, fees and repayment schedule with the lender. A floating rate can change, so understand how a rate change could affect your EMI or tenure.
